Where we come from: The IDALABS founders

IDALABS founders Alexander Westen and Tobias Guertler stand in front of large windows in the Kiel IDALABS office and laugh at the camera. Alexander wears a shaved head, short beard, and a black T-shirt. Tobias wears short, salt-and-pepper hair, a trimmed beard, and a blue turtleneck.

In 2014, our founder Tobias Guertler wrote the first version of inventory management software, initially as a hobby and out of enthusiasm for digital tools. With more than 20 years of experience in IT and logistics, he could see that many trade businesses in construction were struggling with complex, error prone processes. A smart, simple digital solution was needed.

In 2017, Tobias’ idea became IDALABS GmbH, founded alongside software developer Alexander Westen. What started as a tool for inventory management evolved, in close collaboration with trade businesses, into IDA, a comprehensive ERP system (Enterprise Resource Planning) that supports workflows across the trades and production. Today, a team of more than 30 digital professionals drives digitisation in the trades with expertise and passion.

Tobias Guertler

Founder and Managing Director

Tobias Guertler founded IDALABS in 2017 and brings more than 25 years’ experience in IT. Before IDA, he ran an IT company and helped digitise global business processes as a process manager in the logistics sector. At IDALABS, Tobias leads sales, customer support, and strategic development.
“I get passionate about eliminating wasteful processes, chaotic paperwork, and the same data captured ten times across different tools. That should not be normal for any business. With IDA, I want to bring enterprise level process discipline to the trades. That only works with a solution that connects everything, end to end, in one system.”

Alexander Westen

Managing Director

Alexander Westen has been Managing Director at IDALABS since 2018. With a Bachelor’s degree in Business Informatics and a Master’s in IT Management, he brings deep technical expertise. Before IDALABS, he led an international development team at a Canadian consulting firm. Today he ensures our technology runs smoothly, from architecture through to software quality.
“Technical innovation is never the goal in itself for me, it has to make life easier for the trades. We improve IDA not because we love technology, but because we want to deliver the greatest benefit for our customers. That is how an evolving ecosystem emerges, rather than rigid software. With sustainable, maintainable software architecture, we help teams work more efficiently every day.”
